Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister, will answer questions of his voters (notably the youth sections) online, from questions submitted via YouTube.

Gordon Brown on YouTube The prime minister has recently come under fire from political opponents like David Cameron, who referred to Gordon Brown as an analogue politician in a digital era. The PM has said that he expects the forum to be a regular event.

Politicians get a chance in prime ministers question time and other question times – I think it’s time the public had a chance.

David Cameron, who is seemingly at ease with modern technology, broadcasts live from his webcam at the breakfast table. The British PM’s launch of online Q&A sessions is expected to be a response to this too.

The Prime Minister will answer questions on topics ranging from globalisation, climate change, housing and jobs to public services. Mr Brown will also address Google’s annual conference later, where he is expected to announce a technology overhaul for UK’s public services.

Questions for the ‘Ask The PM’ sessions can be submitted to the Downing Street YouTube website by 21 June. You can also visit the official website. The Downing Street YouTube channel was launched in April 2007 under Tony Blair.

My thoughts

Answering questions filed online is a great idea (just ask Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama). US Presidential candidates had also had similar Q&A sessions live, answering to several questions submitted by citizens via YouTube videos. If Gordon Brown can pull this off regularly, it will be a milestone and a trend-setter for the rest of the world.
