Ubuntu 8.10 was released recently, but developers have already brought out an alpha of the next version of Ubuntu, version 9.04, codenamed Jaunty Jackalope.
The usual Ubuntu development consists of six alphas, one beta, and a final Release Candidate before the actual release. We are a long way from the final version – which will be launched on April 23rd, 2009, but any new version brings with it excitement. I hope that Jaunty will solve some of the problems associated with Ibex, and also bring a proper theme.
Visually, this alpha is unchanged from Ubuntu 8.10, but there have been changes under the hood. It appears that the developers have not yet integrated OpenOffice.org 3 into the alpha, though it will probably be included in later alpha versions.
How to upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10
Note that this is an alpha release, unfit for production use. To upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10, press Alt+F2 and type in update-manager -d. Update Manager will open with an alert of the new release 9.04 (though it is alpha). Click Upgrade to begin the upgrade process.
