Thailand plans to sue Google’s YouTube, but later drops the plan
Google is in trouble……or rather was. They have now gotten out of the abyss that copyright violation lawsuits are!
Thai military government, which had earlier sued the Mountain View, CA-based company, has decided to cancel plans to sue Google.
The culprit is some video clips on YouTube, a property of Google, which supposedly insults the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Thai government had, on April 4, blocked access to YouTube in the country. This was a backlash of Google’s refusal to remove the offensive clips.
Now, realising the trouble they are in, Google has removed the clips, prompting the cancellation of the lawsuit.
We have the deepest respect for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej
So runs Google’s letter to the ministry.
Plans had been finalized to sue Google for charges of offense against monarchy. This is a very serious offence, as past incidence have taught us. A Swiss national was sentenced to 9 years in prison(or was it 10? Who knows, I read it some time back).
Thailand’s military government came to power after a coup that saw the overthrow of then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
The military government now follow a system of blocking websites, much like China. China blocks sites critical of their capture of Tibet, while Thaiwan blocks sites critical of the military regime. Simple, eh? I am a rocket-scientist! ![]()
