After the all government hush over Google and others’ behavioural ad targeting techniques, Google and Yahoo have turned around completely and provided an easy way to opt out of ad targeting. Google made it possible to opt out of both Google and Doubleclick ad targeting with one click yesterday (talk about hitting two birds with a stone…).
Yahoo spokesperson said that the new policy was a direct response to Congressional scrutiny over the intrusiveness of online advertising and behavioral targeting. Google’s announcement was not so direct, but we know the reason any way
Opt out of Yahoo’s targeting and Google’s targeting.
And before you ask me – I have not opted out. I personally feel that it is a bad idea to do so – it will make ads less relevant. Besides, not many would worry over a random server tracking your behaviour – there are millions of people online that it will not be used in any improper way. This seems like one of those weird US Congressional scrutinies that end up in the middle of nowhere.
