We’ve seen everything(camera, audio player etc.) and a kitchen sink thrown into a cellphone. Just when everything is cooling down, those blokes at Nokia’s labs have come up with a complex system to detect lightning.

One of the pioneers in the field, the Finnish giant has filed applications for a patent for the technology.

On the tech side of things, it involves clever use of the various sensors like FM, GSM and Bluetooth to detect radio waves produced by lightning. Nokia’s expertise is in developing a software that takes these inputs and churns out results about whether lightning is closing in on the user. If it is unsafe, the mobile alerts the user.

The potential of the technology is tremendous. Potential clients include the elderly and those involved in outdoor sports and adventures. As for the common office worker, it doesn’t mean much. Yet ;)
Further details remain sketchy, as Nokia are silent about the details about the patent.
