How to monitor monthly bandwidth usage (in light of Comcast’s 250GB bandwidth limit)

News has been spreading like wildfire that, starting October 1, Comcast (an ISP in USA) will enforce a monthly quota of 250GB bandwidth for all users. This is an effort by Comcast to reduce bandwidth usage, which has been rising due to YouTube and other high bandwidth web applications, and also by BitTorrent.

250 GB is a large amount of data (probably as large as your hard drive), and would take a lot of Internet usage. However, with high bandwidth applications, power users will soon hit the limits. It is not clear what action Comcast will initiate when a user exceeds the limit - probably overage fines.

So, how would you restrict yourselves from going over the limit? To keep track of your bandwidth usage and stay within limits, you can use NetMeter, a free tool for Windows.

I still remember just a year ago when BSNL(public ISP in India) was providing the only broadband service in India with a maximum limit of 250 MB…..now beat that Comcast :)

  2. @VishTecho: Indeed. I was on dialup when BSNL had that limit (I am on broadband from another ISP now) - beat that!
