SMS has been the rage for some time, with the youth and elders equally interested. Most modern websites/applications (for example, Twitter) has SMS integration.
Curiosly, out of the big three mail services (GMail, Yahoo and Windows Live Mail), only GMail does not have SMS facilities. A new Gmail Labs feature will soon allow you to send SMSes from within your GMail window. The facility, which was scheduled to be released soon, has been pushed back due to bugs discovered by the Labs team. The facility is currently available only for cell numbers in USA, but it would be exciting to have it in rest of the world too. Whether Google will monetize the messages with embedded text ads remains to be seen.
