Whoever said technology should be fun was damn right – because we have two crazy ways to spell words that you input by using images pulled from two of the more popular web applications: Flickr and Google Earth.

Spell with Flickr

Flickr Spell Spell with Flickr is a fun web app that an input of text (a few words), and returns Flickr images that match the letters typed. You can also replace the images by clicking them once. Seriously, someone needs to give the Spell with Flickr page a redesign – it currently has a sickening blue-on-black color scheme.

Here is a result image for “TechZilo”:

Spell with Google Earth: geoGreeting

geoGreeting logo geoGreeting is similar to Spell with Flickr in concept. The difference is that geoGreeting shows images of various buildings photographed from sky, pulled in from Google Earth. The effect is instant, because the website preloads a bunch of images for each letter of the English alphabet.

If you mouse over any of the letters, you’ll see the location of the building on a global map.

My thoughts

I have seen many people praise Spell with Flickr and say that geoGreeting is ‘not quite there yet’, but I personally feel that both of them are creative web apps. Spell with Flickr has the advantage of more variety from Flickr and code to embed the image in a webpage, whereas a word spelled by geoGreeting can be saved with a URL that they provide. Clicking on individual images of buildings (that spell the word) in geoGreeting also shows some additional information about the building – trivia for fun!
