iPhone 2.2 firmware brings better design to several elements of the UI. There are also new features like Google Street View and support for podcasts downloading via WiFi. This method of iPhone firmware unlock works for the iPhone 2G version only. Note that if you own a purchased version of previous firmware, version 2.2 is a free upgrade.

How to unlock iPhone 2.2 firmware for free
- Download iPhone 2.2 firmware iPhone 2G from links below:

After downloading the above files, extract them using IZArc or 7Zip (Windows), or UnRAR (for Mac OSX).
You will get a file named iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw
- Connect iPhone to computer and open iTunes. Important: Click Cancel if iTunes asks you to update your iPhone to the latest firmware.
- Backup all important data on iPhone.
- Press and hold Shift and click “Restore” and point iTunes to iPhone 2.2 Firmware that you downloaded and extracted.
If done correctly, the iPhone would be an unlocked and jailbroken with firmware 2.2. Image credit: Apple.
