Finding the version number, build number and service pack of a Windows install is relatively easy.

Double clicking the “System” box will bring up system information in Windows XP and Vista. Alternatively, you can click Start, and then click Run, type winver, and click OK. A small window will come up showing you OS details, version number, service packs applied (if any) etc.
