Download Firefox 3 If you have been active online, reading websites, blogs and/or feeds, you would have known about Firefox 3 download record attempt.

Mozilla, creators of Firefox, wants to set a world record for most downloads of a software on a day. That day happens to be on the release date of Firefox - June 17. Mozilla calculates that this world record will help spread awareness of Firefox more, and presumably evade into non-geek sections of computer users that Firefox has previously left untouched. More than 1.6 million individuals have pledged to download Firefox on June 17, and hopefully many more will.

Download links to Mozilla Firefox will appear within an hour. If you are eager to get your hands on that great software (yes, it is light-years ahead of Firefox 2), you can download them directly from Mozilla’s servers by clicking one of the URLs below. Since these links are for Mozilla’s HTTP copies, they will almost certainly be counted towards the record attempt:

Update: Mozilla Firefox 3 final version is now officially available from Firefox download page.

Firefox 3 has been a widely anticipated release, with awesome performance improvements (rivalling Opera and Safari in some tests), better OS integration (in terms of looks), revamped functionality of location bar (it now acts as a search field for your website, bookmarks and website content search), one-click bookmarking etc.

I have been personally amazed by the improvements, in terms of speed and aesthetics when I tested portable versions of previous betas and release candidates. Also, the nagging memory problems in Firefox 2 (where it would consume ever-increasing amount of RAM) has been fixed, and memory usage has been found to be lower than Opera in many cases. I am comparing it to Opera because it is pretty much the fastest browser around (Safari fans might argue against this, but even hardcore Mac users sometimes testify otherwise). I am using Firefox 3 right now, and will write a full-blown review of it tomorrow. Stay tuned, and happy ‘foxing!

  1. according to the mozilla site only the official link will count to the world record and not any of their http copy sites

  2. I don’t know why but I am not too excited about this record. But still Mozilla people are smart and know how to spread the word (read firefox). :)

  3. @Stephan: I now see that the links that I provided actually points to the file that is linked to from Mozilla’s websites also. So, it will count.

@TechnoDiary: Most of the people excited about this are those who are amazed by the power of open-source software. If you are not one of them, oh well ;) I can only hope you’ll be converted to the ‘lighter’ side.
