Sumesh was kind enough to email me privately with a few other options. If anyone out there is interested, I found VirtuaWin to be very good: http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net/ . It doesn't quite have all the bells and whistles of Dexpot, but it's much more stable in my experience. Thanks, Sumesh!

A linux user here, so I'm used to virtual desktops. I'm impressed with dexpot's features and flexibiility. I'm frustrated with a few things: sometimes it completely loses windows (forcing me to go to the "Desktop Windows" dialog to resurrect them); desktop rules often fail to be applied automatically ("copy to all desktops" in my case); and often copies of windows will follow me when I switch desktop. To fix the latter, I have to right-click and move it back to the source desktop.

I'm not aware of any other application that comes close to doing as much as dexpot does, so I've been sticking with it despite these annoyances, but it'd be nice if these things were fixed. (Development pace seems a bit slow, though.)

@Binny VA: I haven't had any crashes with Dexpot (or any other desktop switching apps), but one glitch that I have since seen is that some windows leave residue. For example, opening Photoshop in any desktop will show a shadow of PS in other desktops, which is very distracting.

Before switching to linux, I installed a few software with this functionality. The problem is, when I open up a lot of apps - the time when I really need this multi desktop functionality, these apps become unstable. Most of the time they crash.

Anyway that was years ago - hopefully Dexpot is a more stable application.
