Free stuff, be it software, icons and graphics, music or videos, go viral easily. Free stuff, of het nu software, iconen en afbeeldingen, muziek of video's, ga virale gemakkelijk. We saw free music (Nine Inch Rails) and free movies (Steal this Film) going viral. We zagen gratis muziek (Nine Inch Rails) en gratis films (Steal This Film) gaat virale. This is because no one can truly say no to free stuff – they're so attractive. Dit is omdat niemand echt kan niet zeggen tegen gratis spullen - ze zijn zo aantrekkelijk.
A select few artists have released their albums for free online, and they have been appreciated and welcomed by listeners. Cold Electric Koude Electric is a music band comprised of college students from the University of Texas. is een muziek-band bestaat uit studenten van de Universiteit van Texas. Though the mention of a bunch of college students might bring memories of 'amateurish' to you, their albums have received very good comments from the various torrent pages (torrent page at Demonoid alone has 356 comments). Cold Electric has promised to release their next album on Demonoid exlusively for the first few weeks, which is something that I look forward to. The business model of Cold Electric is quite interesting – release free albums to go viral online, and utilize that popularity to land opportunities for live performances. This idea is not sustainable for full time professional record labels, but there are a few points to note: Dit idee is niet duurzaam voor full-time professioneel platenmaatschappijen, maar er zijn een paar punten op te merken:

This is also the group whom I deem to be unable to support themselves with the business model of Cold Electric. - With no large advertising and marketing budgets, new labels could use the free music model to promote themselves and their music. - Once a label becomes popular, they could release commercial albums for sale. Zodra een label populair wordt, kunnen ze vrij commerciële albums te koop. They will thus be able to support themselves. Zij zullen dus in staat zijn om zichzelf te onderhouden. As for us listeners, there will be other good labels and albums that are coming up. Wat voor ons luisteraars zullen er andere goede labels en albums die zijn coming up.
Of course, all of this could be just a pipe dream, but as of now, the future looks bright. Natuurlijk kon dit alles gewoon een utopie, maar als nu, de toekomst ziet er rooskleurig uit. We are seeing an increasing number of new bands releasing their music for free (Nine Inch Nails, among others). We zien een toenemend aantal nieuwe bands vrijgeven van hun muziek gratis (Nine Inch Nails, onder andere). Let us hope that better bands also see the positive aspects of this. Laten we hopen dat een betere bands zie ook de positieve aspecten van deze.
