Free stuff, be it software, icons and graphics, music or videos, go viral easily. We saw free music (Nine Inch Rails) and free movies (Steal this Film) going viral. This is because no one can truly say no to free stuff – they’re so attractive.
A select few artists have released their albums for free online, and they have been appreciated and welcomed by listeners. Going by this trend, Cold Electric has launched their debut music album (13 tracks) on Demonoid and Mininova, amongst other torrent sites.
Cold Electric is a music band comprised of college students from the University of Texas. Though the mention of a bunch of college students might bring memories of ‘amateurish’ to you, their albums have received very good comments from the various torrent pages (torrent page at Demonoid alone has 356 comments). Me? I will be downloading it as soon as I finish with other downloads.
I will also write a brief review of their Cold Electric (the album is also named the same) after downloading. Meanwhile, feel free to leave your quick review in a comment on this post (and I will pick and feature the best review here, so leave your URl for credit attribution).
Cold Electric has promised to release their next album on Demonoid exlusively for the first few weeks, which is something that I look forward to. Apple Mac fans would probably be happy when I say that they do all their production work on Macs
The business model of Cold Electric
The business model of Cold Electric is quite interesting – release free albums to go viral online, and utilize that popularity to land opportunities for live performances. This idea is not sustainable for full time professional record labels, but there are a few points to note:
- New labels usually struggle for any kind of footing. This is also the group whom I deem to be unable to support themselves with the business model of Cold Electric.
- With no large advertising and marketing budgets, new labels could use the free music model to promote themselves and their music. With this, everyone wins. The label wins (free promotion) and the listeners benefit (free music).
- Once a label becomes popular, they could release commercial albums for sale. They will thus be able to support themselves. As for us listeners, there will be other good labels and albums that are coming up.
Of course, all of this could be just a pipe dream, but as of now, the future looks bright. We are seeing an increasing number of new bands releasing their music for free (Nine Inch Nails, among others). Let us hope that better bands also see the positive aspects of this.
To quote Mike (of Cold Electric), “And if you like this music, please SHARE IT with someone else”. So, get yourselves down to downloading and sharing. Get the Cold Electric album’s torrent from:
- Demonoid (or, get lossless version from Demonoid)
- Mininova
- Visit Cold Electric’s homepage, or tell them how much you liked their music from their contact page.
- Also, consider donating to Cold Electric if you enjoyed their music – donations support them, and will help them release more free albums (and before you ask me, I’ll be donating a small sum if I like the music too).
I couldn’t have said it better myself! Thanks so much for writing this review for our band. I’ll digg it for sure!!!
