11 beautiful Ubuntu Linux themes

Ubuntu is a popular Linux distribution – among the most user-friendly (although Linux Mint etc. are better in that regard) of all. Like any other Linux flavour, it is open-source and has a huge community behind it. Being open-source, Ubuntu can be customized extensively.

Unfortunately, for an OS that holds such promise, Ubuntu’s appearance (or themes) have always fallen short of expectation. Default theme revamps were promised several times, only to be pushed to the next release due to time constraints. This has not stopped talented artists from creating their own themes for Ubuntu.

Themes in Ubuntu are a combination of several things: GTK theme, login theme, icons, wallpapers etc. You can read the instructions to install an Ubuntu theme if you do not how.

Here is a little collection of Ubuntu themes that I liked – among those included are dark themes, glossy and non-glossy, and some Mac OS X look-alikes.

Free Ubuntu themes

Mac 4 Lin theme
If you like Mac OS X interface, this theme is worth a try. It skins just about every part of Ubuntu, and is being actively developed.

Glow
A set of several themes (with 8 variations): Cinder (grey), Fire (red), Flower (pink), Grass (green), Ice (silver blue), Lava (darker orange), Sand (orange), and Water (blue). Each variation contains light and dark versions.

Moomex (dark theme)
A beautiful dark theme. Some elements look like Mac OS X.

Twitter is gaining in popularity, but their own website seems to be a sore point. One of the reasons for increasing popularity of third-party Twitter clients is the lack of features in its website.

The community has come up with solutions, as usual. My personal favorite is Greasemonkey scripts, as they are more powerful than bookmarklets and less resource-hungry than extensions. Below is a collection of useful Greasemonkey scripts for Firefox. You must get Firefox and then Greasemonkey addon. And while you’re at it, why not follow me on Twitter?

Greasemonkey scripts for Twitter users

Twitter search results on Google – Google may buy Twitter, but untill then, use this userscript to see real-time search results from Twitter on Google search pages.

Twitter Translate – Adds links for each tweet to translate (using Google Translate).

Rapid Response – Adds a box on Twitter profiles to quickly respond to the user, from within his/her profile.

Jaiku Theme – Restyle Twitter pages using Jaiku’s bubble theme.

Twitter AJAX Reload – Reloads Twitter every two minutes using AJAX (ie. without page reload). A countdown is shown above the last status. If there is any text in the status box, reload is postponed.

Troys Twitter – Adds a bunch of useful features like nested replies, custom search tabs, autocomplete, autopagination, retweet button, URL expansion etc. (see original post). Easily the most powerful userscript in this list.

Google Reader to Twitter – Share Google Reader items on Twitter.

Reverse Tweet Order – Reverses the order of Tweets on a Twitter page.

Twitter Textarea Limitless – Removes character counter and blockade when your tweet exceed number of characters.

Netcasts, or podcasts, as they are popularly known, are a popular way to keep up with the latest happenings in a niche. Podcasts are usually daily or weekly.

Podcasts are more convenient in that you can listen to and stay updated with news without staying glued to your computer. You can listen to podcasts while jogging, working out in the gym, during the commute to office or while you chill out.

I have been listening to podcasts ever since I discovered Diggnation. Below is a roundup of the best, professional-quality podcasts in the technology niche. Instead of going by download stats, I looked for variety (gadgets, web, general tech and security) and also the style of podcasts. This is not a complete list by any means, but should get you started with the best, or if you already listen to other podcasts, add to your list. Please add your recommendations in comments, and also take the poll at the end of this post.

iTunes and RSS links have been provided. If you use a music player other than iPod, you might want to use Juice.

Weekly tech news: TWiT

TWiT is hosted by former TechTV host Leo Laporte, and features a host of other tech and web bigwigs regularly. TWiT is one of the most popular tech podcasts. For me, the standout factor is the clarity of voice, professionalism and wit of Leo Laporte. It makes listening to the podcast so much more fun.

GIMP, the free and open-source image editor, is often blamed for its lack of polish in its interface. However, with sufficient addons (particularly plugins), you can achieve a lot of functionality found in other editors.

Our previous GIMP plugins post looked at best plugins for web design, photography etc. In this second roundup, we will take a look at plugins that bring Photoshop’s features to GIMP. This is significant, because GIMP typically draws a lot of flack for not having many of Photoshop’s functionality.

Slice and Merge: Split one image ‘file’ into smaller ‘files’, and to recombine it successively. One single image ‘file’ can be split into unlimited number of files.

VLC Player (short for Videolan Client) is one of the most popular media players. It is free, open-source and cross-platform compatible and plays most formats of video. Perhaps the only drawback is its drab interface skin.

VLC’s official site and numerous enthusiasts are the saving grace, however. VLC has skins to customize the inteface. Below are 8 beautiful VLC skins that could replace the default skin. Note that the below screenshots do no justice to the skins – skins are (relatively) better-looking once installed.

How to install VLC skins

Installing skins on VLC is as easy as placing the skins into VLC skins directory (differs according to OS).

On Windows: (usually C:Program FilesVLCskins)
On Linux: ~/.share/vlc/skins2

Once the skin is installed, open VLC settings and change interface from native to skins. Then, right click anywhere and go to Interface>Choose Skin to select your skin. VLC needs to be restarted to change to skins mode. Sadly, VLC skins do not work on Mac OS X.

To download these VLC skins, visit the Skins page on the VLC site and search the first few letters of the theme name – they’re all listed in a single page.

Windows platform has the maximum number of users, and there is a wide variety of freeware (software that is not paid) available for various purposes. Some applications are brilliant, while others are usable(let us not talk about crapware).

As a long-time Windows user, I have tested and settled for good applications for each purpose. Here is a list essential freeware for Windows – all of which I personally use and whole-heartedly recommend. Also see 6 websites to fulfill all your freeware download needs. Archiving: 7zip

Alternative for: WinZip/WinRar
7zip is an excellent archival tool for all platforms – Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. It supports all the usual file formats, but it can also unpack some unusual file formats, not to mention the 7z format. 7z format is a new open archive format with high compression, support for encryption and unicode encoding.

Alternative for: Norton/Kaspersky antivirus
Avast is one of the best antivirus tools that you can get, free or otherwise. It is known for its low footprint, tiny online updates (which bodes well for those on slower connections) and has a good real-time scanner.

RSS: FeedDemon

Alternative for: Ahead Nero

Encryption: TrueCrypt

TrueCrypt is a free encryption utility, and can encrypt specific files/folders or even entire partitions. It is very useful to protect your privacy, as even police cannot (legally) ask you to provide password for an encrypted drive (in a recent incident, a court judge ruled so). This should come in handy when you are travelling to/from areas where customs officials check your computer for illegal content.

IM: Pidgin

Pidgin is a popular IM client, and like Firefox, has plugins to extend its capabilities. Pidgin is a multi-protocol client, which means that it supports most networks you would use (GTalk/Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, AIM etc.).

Spam is rising as fast as it has ever, and most inboxes are flooded with thousands of spam mails every day. Mailinator is one of the more reputed players in temporary email boxes business. To get a temporary mail box, simply send an email to it – no signup required.

SpamGourmet gives you a temporary and permanent addresses. You can then give out the temporary addresses, from which the first 3 mails are forwarded to your permanent address. Mails sent thereafter to the temporary address is discarded. You should never give out your permanent address.

Spambox lets you select the time until the email account self-destructs.

EmailZorz lets you make an address like someone@emailzorz.com. There are also a few variations to the domain – you can use emailrama.com, emailzorz.com, e-mailzorz.com and mailzorz.com

Skeefmail lets you pick a temporary address. You can also choose a random address instead of picking one yourselves.

RapidShare is a popular choice to host files online for free. RapidShare has generous limits (200MB file upload limit) even in a free account. To download a file, simply use the link for the file. If you want to share files with friends, upload the file to RapidShare and send the links to download.

RapidShare can be really useful if you know how to get the right files. On RapidShare, you can get every type of content you could possibly dream of – warez, songs, pirated content, pr0n etc. One feature they miss (and I wonder why) is searching for files. You could use complicated Google search operators, but to make your job easier, here are the best search engines to search for content you need, on RapidShare. Simply type your search terms and hit enter – just like Google.
