Napster founder Shawn Fanning’s startup Rupture bought by EA

Napster founder Shawn Fanning founded Rupture, a social-networking gaming company (startup). Little did he know that his startup would be brought over by Electronic Arts, a popular game studio. He will be working at Electronic Arts, which has bought Rupture for USD 30 million.

Rupture’s first product was a social network for players of the online video game World of Warcraft, but it only came out with a beta version and kept delaying its public launch.

Nudity in Halo 2 : A publicity stunt

Halo 2 for PC, the much anticipated sequel of Halo, will be delayed by more than a week, stating reasons of unwanted and unapproved nudity in the game.

Nintendo Wii leads the console sales race against Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox360

Nintendo’s wildly popular, revolutionary Wii console leads the console sales again. Wii sold twice the number of Xbox 360 consoles, its nearest competitors, in April. Sony’s PlayStation 3 were outsold 3 to 1 by Wii.

Nintendo sold more than 350,000 Wii, priced lowest of all consoles at $250. In stark contrast, Sony shipped a measly 82,000 units of the PlayStation 3, whose basic model sports a price-tag of a whopping $500. Microsoft shipped 174,000 Xbox 360s at $300 for the basic model.

Sony forecasts loss for 2007, thanks to loss from PS3 sales

Sony, manufacturers of the legendary PlayStation range of consoles, forecasts a loss of over US$413 million, in Sony’s console game division this year.

Their recovery from these huge losses are not expected any time soon. More specifically, the profits will start coming in for Sony only after the PlayStation3 is put into widespread use and games are sold in large numbers.

Earlier this week, Sony had reported operating losses for the first quarter of 2007. Bulk of this loss was caused by PS3.

Microsoft hopeful of success with cross-platform gaming; Wii surges ahead in sales in Japan

Microsoft is hopeful of the success of its innovative gaming platform, which brings together Xbox 360 and the PC. It is due for launch in May. They hope that the launch of the platform will give PC gaming a boost in Japan and in turn mean better business for its console.
