Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 is an anti-virus plus anti-spyware software for Windows XP and Vista. Trend Micro 2009 was launched recently, and they are giving away free licenses of Trend Micro Internet Security suite for free. Trend Micro also includes a NetNanny-like content filter.

TechSmith SnagIt is one of the best (paid) screencasting apps for Windows. It has all the regular screen capture options, and a built-in editor with which you can add captions, watermark, crop and resize images.

I grabbed a copy of Snagit 7 in 2007 when its makers, TechSmith offered it for free when Snagit 8 was launched. Now, version 9 has been launched, and TechSmith is giving away TechSmith 7.2.5 for free again. As I write this, I am downloading it, and will have screenshots up in a few minutes.

Here are the instructions to get a copy of Snagit for free:

Download Snagit free screen capture software from TechSmith website.

Once you have downloaded your free copy of Snagit, run it (snagit.exe). After installation, run it. It will ask you for a serial number for the first time: click Unlock and enter your name.

For the free SnagIt license key, try this: CU9XM-T8G78-XJQXA-MSZMA-P9E43
If it does not work, get a free key from TechSmith website via email.

Once you enter the serial key, it will show a confirmation of registration.

When you purchase for over Rs. 1000 and enter any of the coupon codes given on the promotion page, you get one of the several gifts on offer, depending on the amount spent: Sandisk USB drive, iBall USB hub or headset, Seinheiser headphones, Transend hard drive or Apple iPod Shuffle. I bought an iPod Shuffle recently, and used the coupon code for a Sandisk USB drive.

The free version of Avira Antivirus is among the most popular. It is also a good performer and frequently features within the top 10 antivirus tools (free and paid) in many online comparisons. Most users obviously prefer the free version of Avira for cost benefits ($0!).

The premium version, with more features and power, costs around US$55. However, we now have a perfectly legal, valid method of getting a free Avira Premium license key – and that too, from the Avira website. The Avira website is in German, but with help from Google Translate, I was able to understand what fields to fill in and how to proceed. I have done all the ~~hard work~~ translation for you, so you need only follow the instructions below. The downloaded file will be in German, but you can later change the program to use English. Follow the steps below to download a free license key for Avira Premium suite for 6 months.

Download Avira Premium setup file (get the license key from below instructions before installing).
Visit the promotion page for free license key (as shown in below screenshot).
Enter the details as follows:
Select Herr (Mr.) or Frau (Ms).
Vorname: First name
Nachname: Surname
Email-Adresse: Your email address (which has to be valid to receive your license key)
Land: Country

Note: It would be advised to register your country as Deutscheland (Germany), as this offer may not be valid outside Germany.
Click the button “Lizenz anfordern”. You will get a page as shown below. Click the button.
You will now be lead to a page as shown below. Click the icon marked with red, and save the file in My Documents.
Double click the setup file and start installation. During installation, in one of the steps, you need to input the license key file. Click “Durchsuchen” and locate the key file you downloaded to My Documents.

You should now have a working copy of Avira Antivirus Premium. Enjoy!

MacHeist, known for their paid software bundles, is giving away paid applications for free until Christmas day. The promotion, named Mac Giving Tree, has 6 applications up for grabs. Two can be downloaded already, while the other four will be available on Christmas morning (requires sign up).
